The People

People are the most important part of our business. We have a hard-working, loyal, and enthusiastic team of competent staff.

Each and every staff member has their own specialist areas; however our staff are multi-skilled and work across the board.

Johnny Palmer
Johnny Palmer BA Production Designer, Company Director and Founder Background:

Johnny started his event career by working through university as a professional DJ. The draw of creative design, management and technical challenges drew him into event technical production and design.  His experience ranges from producing shows at London Fashon Week, to FTSE 100 PR Campaigns to designing and engineering some of SXS' bespoke equipment. Johnny has personally produced in excess of 1000 events and has been the designer and production manager of some of SXS' finest work.

Skills:

Technical production, creative design, site management, event engineering, branded event design and 'special projects'.

Involvement in your project:

Johnny is called in when any project requires a very unique skill set of 'out-of-the-box' thinking. Johnny also offers guidance and assistance to the rest of the team with their projects. On occasion, Johnny has worked as a consultant on projects for architects, event committees and television producers.

Personal Interests:

Management theory, stills and video photography, structural design, architecture, economics, cinema, dog training, mixology, and zombie movies.

Anika Zold
Anika Zold BA (Hons) Event Design Consultant / Production Manager Background:

Anika studied Media Practice at Bristol UWE and has since then worked in the television industry supplying broadcast equipment for well-known dramas, films and documentaries. She joined SXS in 2015 taking over from Rosie Felvus as Project Manager and since joining she has worked on a wide range of projects from fashion shows, to student balls, weddings and award shows. She has first class organisational skills and loves to get involved in themed events.

Skills:

Creative event design, theming, camera and film knowledge, account-handling and project managing.

Involvement in your project:

Anika is one of our account handlers / project managers and is the first person you will speak with if you contact the office. She will advise, quote and drive your project forward helping you create your vision.

Personal Interests:

Hosting themed parties & events, socialising, loves horror films, and swimming.

Tim Curwen
Tim Curwen BSc Production Manager and LED Video Specialist Background:

Tim originally joined SXS as a placement student as part of his Music Systems Engineering Degree and continued to work part-time through the rest of his degree. After graduation Tim joined the company full-time as a Production Technician. Extensive investment in his training and mentoring has helped Tim become a respected Production Manager and Account Handler. Tim has worked on a very wide range of projects from Oxbridge Balls to retail installations, to major awards shows to festivals to exhibition rigging projects, all the way gaining in-depth technical and project knowledge.

Skills:

Tim has a broad skill set of all areas of technical production including audio, rigging, lighting, power, decor, staging, video and carpentry. He is also developing excellent account-handling and client support skills. He is a product specialist for our Lumio LED video system.

Involvement in your project:

Tim could be involved in your event as a production technician, production manager or account handler. If your event has an LED Video Wall on it, it is likely that Tim pre-set the system in the warehouse.

Personal Interests:

Cycling, Caving, Keeping fit, Old cars, Guitars, Playing in bands, anything fast and everything Audio.

Alex Thompson
Alex Thompson BSc Head of Audio & Flightcase Manufacture Background:

Alex joined SXS as a student while studying Audio Music Technology at UWE. 12 years later he has progressed to senior technician and head of our sound department. He is the longest standing staff member at SXS. Alex is one of the most competent, multi-skilled and thorough technicians in the industry.

Skills:

Live sound, system tech, lighting, video, rigging, content editing, crew bossing and production management.

Involvement in your project:

If your job has a large sound aspect, Alex will most likely be designing and setting up the sound on site. When he's not on site, Alex also makes sure the equipment for your event is in good condition and well-prepped.

Personal Interests:

Photography, Power Kiting, Mountain Biking and Climbing.

Dan Giddings
Dan Giddings Senior Lighting Technician Background:

Dan has been a keen theatre technician since a young age and was recruited into SXS over 5 years ago from our work experience program. Dan is now one of our most valued multi-skilled technicians, but has a particular flair for all things aesthetic, and is head of our lighting department.

Skills:

Lighting design, luminaire maintenance, lighting operation, AV, aesthetics.

Involvement in your project:

Dan will be in charge of any in-depth lighting design or operation your event might need, as well as preparing and maintaining equipment prior to the event.

Personal Interests:

Dan is a polite, friendly, well presented young man who plays guitar in an angry rock band at the weekend.

Laurie Kaye
Laurie Kaye Sound Engineer and General Technician Background:

Laurie first started doing live sound as a teenager and went on to get his HND in Live Sound Engineering. In his career he has worked with The Wiggles, Joss Stone, The Freestylers, Utah Saints, DJ Switch, The XX and Crowded House among others.

Skills:

Sound engineering, rigging, crew bossing.

Involvement in your project:

Laurie is one of main sound and AV technicians so will often prep and operate at your event.

Personal Interests:

Photography and Video Editing, Magnetic Theory and the Searl Effect Generator, surfing and snowboarding, Laurie is also a keen drummer and producing music with his band at the weekends.

Cathy Shay
Cathy Shay LLB (Hons) HR and Compliance Manager Background:

Cathy studied Law at university and took a career change into event design. She has been with SXS for many years and offers clients fresh and original designs for their events. In 2011 Cathy handed over her Project Management role to Rosie and now looks after our compliance.

Skills:

Creative event design, drapery design, lighting design, corporate account management, film production, business process design, set design, HR and employment law.

Involvement in your project:

Cathy's involvement is mostly advisory, HR and back-office. She ensures our processes run smoothly, the company culture is how it should be and is also committed to us achieving the ISO and BS standards that are relevant to our industry.

Personal Interests:

Interior design, life drawing and, of course, taking Dudley for long walks.

Jordan Tomkins
Jordan Tomkins BSc Project Handler and Video Specialist Background:

Originally a placement student in 2013-14, Jordan has now returned to work with us after graduating from University of the West of England. Like many employees at SXS, he has a BSc Audio and Music Technology degree.

Skills:

Jordan has a wide range of skills ranging from graphics and video editing, to live audio and video engineering, to flightcase manufacture. He is also primarily responsible for our social media content.

Involvement in your project:

If he's not handling your project, Jordan will often be responsible for managing the digital content for your show, or producing promotional footage. When on site, he is most likely to be seen site operating video equipment, however his broad skillset could see him involved in many other disciplines.

Personal Interests:

When he's not at work, Jordan plays guitar in a local pop-punk band and tinkers with his car.

Dudley Palmer (2008-2014)
Dudley Palmer (2008 - 2014 RIP) Head of Security and Staff Morale (2008 - 2014) Background:

Dudley was rescued from Bristol Dogs and Cats home in November 2008, having been found as a stray. We don't know where he was before this, but it is clear he was with people that treated him well. Since him joining our community he has played a valuable role in bringing everyone together as a team.

Dudley died in his sleep in October 2014 following a relaxed night snacking on pork scratching at the pub and cuddling on the sofa.

Dudley had a wonderful life and will be missed by all.

Skills:

Not many, but he is very well behaved and good with other dogs, children and guests at the office.

Involvement in your project:

Very little. He is not allowed on site, but will definitely make you feel welcome if you visit the office.

Personal Interests:

Long walks in the forest, training, food, scavenging, cuddles.
